What is Electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture is a form of treatment where a weak electrical current is used to stimulate the acupuncture needles that have been manually placed, usually in pairs, near the area of pain. The current is generated by a small battery-operated machine and you can alter the intensity of the stimulation yourself. The sensation should not be unpleasant, but should be more intense than that felt with manual stimulation. If the needles have been inserted into certain muscles, you may feel them contract and even cause movement, but this should not be painful or unpleasant. A typical electroacupuncture session will last up to 30 minutes.
Why should I have Electroacupuncture?
The use of electroacupuncture can intensify the dose of the acupuncture treatment and has been used successfully to treat the symptoms of chronic pain conditions such as osteoarthritis of the knee.
Who should not have Electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture is not recommended if you have a history of seizures, heart disease, strokes, a pacemaker, or an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), or if you are pregnant.
